Kakao Friends - Great Trip to Denmark

Kakao Corp commissioned us to create a campaign film for a collaboration between its beloved character brand Kakao Friends and the Danish watch label PICTO.

A playful journey to Denmark, the land of design. What begins as a tightly scheduled trip soon drifts into spontaneous moments of joy—skipping plans, slowing down, and finding beauty in the unexpected.

At Suess Studio, I took on the role of project lead—handling the storyboard, visual development, character design, composition, and editing, with just a sprinkle of frame-by-frame animation.

The Great Plan

Ryan, one of Kakao Friends’ main characters, is known for his serious personality. He tries his best to plan an impressive trip to Copenhagen, but his enthusiasm goes a little too far—resulting in an itinerary so unrealistic that it ends up putting his friends in a tough spot.

To design Ryan’s travel schedule, I actually created an impossible itinerary myself—one that attempts to cover nearly every tour spot in Copenhagen. Following this plan, you could technically pass by almost every attraction in Copenhagen!

A Visual Flip

The moment Ryan’s precious map slips away, the sketchy little world he’s been stuck in falls off too. Suddenly Copenhagen feels colorful, spacious, and alive. We wanted that flip in the story to be reflected in the visuals as well.

Character Design

These are some sketches I used for the character’s visual development.
I tend to focus more on the side view rather than the front—it’s much more fun to design the silhouette, and it’s often where a character’s personality really comes through!
