In a city shaken by climate change and disappearing habitats, a strange new stick insect appears: TUBULUS PLASTICUS, evolved to mimic plastic straws.
What begins as a curious spectacle turns into an eerie presence, quietly disrupting everyday life.
Inspired by the real-life outbreak of stick insects in central Seoul, this animated short blends the cute with the uncanny, the playful with the unsettling.
Here are some background "facts" that affected the resurance of the TUBULUS PLASTICUS.
TUBULUS PLASTICUS
The stick insect is a creature that protects itself by mimicking common twigs or leaves. Not only does it resemble a branch in appearance, but it also sways like one in the wind. This unique "dance" once went viral on social media with the meme "Get Stick Bugged LOL."
In 2020, a stick insect outbreak warning was issued across South Korea. The main cause of the outbreak is believed to be unusually high winter temperatures, which increased their hatching and survival rates.
In 2021, South Korea's Ministry of Environment amended the enforcement rules of the "Act on the Promotion of Saving and Recycling of Resources," banning the use of disposable paper cups, plastic straws, and similar items in restaurants and cafes starting November 24, 2022. However, on November 7, 2023, the ministry withdrew this regulation.
Tubulus Plasticus was born from a strange overlap between ecological anxiety and internet absurdity. In 2020, South Korea experienced an actual outbreak of stick insects—partly due to an unusually warm winter. Around the same time, plastic straw regulations were being introduced, debated, and eventually reversed. Somewhere between this environmental confusion and the viral “Get Stick Bugged LOL” meme, a fictional species emerged in my imagination: a stick insect evolved to mimic plastic straws.
The animation explores how something seemingly harmless or even cute—like a bug that looks like a straw—can gradually become an unsettling presence. The insects begin by quietly blending into the city, but their accumulation hints at a deeper discomfort. The story is absurd, but not far from the truth.
I wanted to reflect on the idea of mimicry not just as camouflage, but as surrender. Inspired by Roger Caillois’ idea of animals dissolving into their environment, Tubulus Plasticus imagines mimicry as a kind of abandonment—where synthetic life forms adapt not to survive, but to disappear into the waste we’ve left behind.
As a motion designer with a background in painting and experimental video, I often approach serious topics through playful visual metaphors. This project is one of those moments where humor and unease intersect, where the silly slowly becomes serious.
Let's take a look at which straws the TUBULUS decided to mimic!

Bugs have so many legs—and animating them manually would be incredibly time-consuming. So, I used the CMotion feature in Cinema 4D to automate and proceduralize their locomotion. Their feet dynamically detect the floor surface in real time, even on animated terrain!
